The Oscars are coming up. How do you feel about them? Do you think they’re a legitimate barometer of what’s actually good?

“[Laughs] That’s so weird to say because I know that’s the common consensus, but “good” is different for everybody. I wanted to run Michael Parks from “Red State” for an Oscar this year, and I was told I’d need $250,000 minimum to do that. We thought we were eligible for SAG Awards, but it turns out that you have to actually submit to the SAG Awards, even if you’re a SAG member, which doesn’t make sense to me. And then the Golden Globe people didn’t want to give Michael Parks consideration because we didn’t screen the movie for them specifically when the movie was out in theaters, but it never was out in theaters so it was kind of ridiculous. You have to jump through these ridiculous little rings to even be considered, and then it’s a popularity contest around who has the most money to run.”

Michelle Yeoh Leads Her People in the First Trailer for ‘The Lady’

Writer-director Luc Besson loves writing strong female leads for his films (‘Nikita,’ ‘The Professional’ and ‘Angel-A,’ all feature women playing badass characters). For his latest movie, ‘The Lady,’Besson examines a different type of female strength. Starring Michelle Yeoh as Aung San Suu Kyi, a Burmese politician put under house arrest for 10 years, ‘The Lady’ focuses on personal sacrifices and love during political turmoil. The first official trailer for ‘The Lady’ has premiered, and it’s easy to see why Yeoh has been garnering early Oscar buzz for the role.

Be Brave: Presumed Oscar Frontrunner ‘War Horse’ Gets New, Emotional Trailer

“Be brave. Be brave. Be brave.” So says the awesomely named Benedict Cumberbatch toward the end of the newest trailer for ‘War Horse,’ a bit of marketing seemingly engineered to produce moist eyes and Oscar nominations. Steven Spielberg! World War I! Lush cinematography! John Williams-like music! Horses! In danger! The brave thing would be watching this at your cubicle, since you’ll likely start bawling before its over. Watch ahead.

Steve Martin Writes Open Letter to Eddie Murphy

Steve Martin, what a swell guy! He acts on both television and film, plays in a bluegrass band and — as of now — offers advice to his fellow comedians.

Martin just wrote an open letter to fellow ‘SNL’ alum Eddie Murphy regarding his Oscar hosting gig next year. (Martin has hosted the show three times — by himself in 2001 and 2003, and with Alec Baldwin in 2010.) In the note, the wild and crazy guy talks about handling nominees who lose (something Murphy is well-versed in), as well as contingency plans if the host gets tired midway through the show.

The Trailer for Oscar Contender ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ Will Probably Make You Cry

Peek behind the Moviefone HQ curtain: your trusty editors were just discussing what 2011 film will emerge as the Best Picture frontrunner moments ago! Will it be the George Clooney-led family drama ‘The Descendants’? Perhaps ‘The Artist,’ with backing from Harvey Weinstein? Maybe presumed Oscar-bait ‘War Horse’ from director Steven Spielberg? Or could it be ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,’ director Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of the best-selling book by Jonathan Safran Foer? Until these films screen the answer will remain elusive but one thing is clear: based on its just-released trailer, ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,’ is poised to make a huge Oscar run. Harvey, George, Steven: you’ve got company.

Leonardo DiCaprio Enters Oscar Race in First Trailer For ‘J. Edgar’

“It’s time this generation learned the difference between a villain and a hero.” So says Leonardo DiCaprio as an old J. Edgar Hoover in the first trailer for the Clint Eastwood-directed Academy Awards hopeful ‘J. Edgar.’ Ominous! ‘Dark Knight’-y, even! Does DiCaprio have enough to take down Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Jean Dujardin in the Best Actor race? Does ‘J. Edgar’ have enough to go the distance?
